ASIN Awards Night

Over the weekend, myself and a few team member from Shiver attended the Australian Screen Industry Network's annual awards night. With a fun theme of Las Vegas, it was an incredible evening and I was able to meet up with many exciting new people and learn all about their journeys and successes.

It was also my honour to be awarded the Best Composer for 2016 for my work on Shiver.

Shiver ended up walking away with 10 awards all up, winning:

  • Best Director - Damian Overton
  • Best Actress - Rosie Keogh
  • Best Composer - Michael Drew
  • Best Screenplay - Damian Overton
  • Members Choice Award - Beau Jones

Certificates of highest achievement were awarded to Ryan Light, Kieron Beilby, Matthew Watkins, Nathan Frost and one for the film.

Overall it was a fantastic start to Shiver's festival run and a huge congratulations to everyones hard work paying off.

24 Hour Challenge

Team still working hard even though it was 3am!

Team still working hard even though it was 3am!

At 8am on Thursday the 15th, several university teams of multiple disciplines came together to compete in the annual 24 hour challenge. The challenge consists of teams being given three words, then splitting off and creating either a game/animation, all within the 24 hour time limit.

The three words we were given were 'Friction', 'Jungle' and 'Spirit'. From there, our team jumped straight into making our game, Firestarters. The concept of the game was for players to create a torch from a centre bonfire to present to their animal spirit totems, with three torches needing to be presented to the totem in order to win the round. However, players had the ability to steal other player's torches and blow them out while they are away from their totems.

Below is a quick evolution of the game:

I created the score and sound design for the game.

Once a player had summoned their spirit animal, a victory track would play.

It was an incredible experience watching everyone pour everything into their discipline, and we were all proud with the final product, which we got runners up for in the final competition. Congratulations to all those involved!

Europe Trip - GDC & Gamescom

The trip was a huge success! I was able to see so many amazing places including Abbey Road Studios and Air Studios, as well as get to play Sir Elton John's Piano in Kings Cross station.

GDC and Gamescom were insane. I couldn't believe how much actually goes into the gaming community and was pleasantly surprised that it is huge beyond all belief. I was able to meet so many great people and hear about the vision and passion involved in their projects.

The whole trip has really opened my eyes to the games industry and I can't wait to see what the next chapter holds for me in this amazing world.

Shiver - Score

Just finished recording guitars for the Shiver soundtrack!

After using Rob Keko in The Neon King score, I knew that I just had to have him on another score. Lucky for me, Shiver granted me that opportunity.

Rob is an outstanding guitarist and is always able to deliver the emotion and focus I need when writing guitar parts. Shiver's score is coming along amazingly and with Rob's additions, is turning into a bigger sound then I thought possible. So please go check him out!
